Celebrating 10 Years of Women Engaged
When our cofounders Malika Redmond and Margaret Kargbo created the organization in 2014, they could not envision the events we would face, but were forward thinking in the strategy necessary to build power in our communities. Thanks to the years of expertise, networks, and love poured in from Malika and Margaret, Women Engaged was actualized in October 2014, with the passion to connect and build power in the community on the issues paramount to Black women, femmes, and girls. Since then our teams have been trailblazers in the movement ushering in new voters who are astute on the issues to make the decisions best for themselves and our communities. Our team situates itself in the longstanding history and traditions of grassroots organizing that have been present for Black people, before enslavement.
In celebrating 10 Years of Women Engaged, we are introducing our new branding inspired by the word Sankofa. Sankofa is the Akan word from Ghana that encapsulates how we enter this new, pivotal year.
"Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi"
which loosely translates to, "It's not taboo to go back and fetch what you missed.”
Sankofa—to return, go, look, seek, and take—reminds us that remembering is vital to progress. WE have always focused on progressing towards a more just and equitable world. As we enter our tenth year of doing amazing work, join us this month and the rest of the year on a journey reconnecting with the histories of the movement, the stories and experiences of our past, and how we connect it to our present moment and envision a future where our full human rights are actualized.

Join us as we mark ten transformative years at Women Engaged, honoring the powerful legacies, histories, and stories that have guided our journey. Rooted in the Sankofa theme—looking back to bring forward—this event invites guests into a world inspired by the wonder of Jingle Jangle in a stunning Afro-Victorian setting. Step aboard this enchanted train as we honor the WE 10, a group of extraordinary individuals nominated by their peers for exemplifying the spirit of Women Engaged and advancing the cause of reproductive justice.
Our family-friendly celebration also offers an unforgettable experience for young attendees, ages 0–14! We’re thrilled to provide onsite childcare, designed to delight and engage, with a winter-themed wonderland of activities tailored to our youngest guests. Children can explore sensory-friendly spaces created to promote relaxation and joy, while a licensed occupational therapist will be present to provide dedicated support for children with special needs. This space ensures that all families feel welcome and that children are included in the evening’s magic.
We will also pay tribute to the 12 foremothers of the Reproductive Justice movement, with a live conversation led by Women Engaged co-founder and CEO Malika Redmond, whose 20+ years of advocacy have empowered communities across the nation. Adding to the magic, Grammy-nominated R&B singer-songwriter Anthony David and the phenomenal Mausiki Scales & the Common Ground Collective will fill the day with incredible music.
Don't miss this celebration—a night where legacies are honored, stories come alive, and families come together to share in a decade of impact with Women Engaged. We look forward to celebrating with you!
